Education Technician (Part-time position)

OVERVIEW

The Education Technician will work closely with SRT’s Education & Volunteer Department and community partners on the coordination and implementation of Nature Explorers, an after-school program offered to 1st-3rd graders at VUSD elementary schools. This will include preparing for and leading field trips for 1st-3rd graders at the Kaweah Oaks Preserves on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, as well as occasional Saturday field trips.

The Education Technician may also occasionally support SRT staff in implementing a variety of grant-funded educational and stewardship programs aimed at creating a lasting bond between local communities and the land, thereby inspiring future land conservation and stewardship.

The Education Technician will spend most of their time in the field.

Sequoia Riverlands Trust is a regional nonprofit land trust focused on the Tulare Basin, which comprises the southern San Joaquin Valley and Sierra foothills of Kern, Kings, Tulare, and Fresno counties, with additional conservation projects in 5 other California counties. We are accredited by the Land Trust Alliance, and our mission to conserve the lands and waters of California’s heartland is supported by our ambitious programs in conservation easements (habitat and farmland), land stewardship, restoration, conservation outreach, and education.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Work closely with SRT Education & Volunteer staff and community partners to prepare coordinate and lead after school field trips on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for 1st-3rd graders from VUSD elementary schools, as well as occasional Saturday mornings

Occasionally assist with the day-to-day operations of assigned SRT Education & Volunteer programs, which may include:

School-based programs

Service, work-based, project-based learning programs and internships for students, with emphasis on opportunities related to stewardship of SRT preserves

Field trips at SRT preserves for students

Community-based programs

Volunteer programs for adults and families, in collaboration with Stewardship and Education & Volunteer staff

Education and volunteer events at SRT preserves for participants of all ages

Other duties as assigned, including

Provide direct assistance with restoration and resource enhancement projects on SRT preserves in coordination with the SRT Stewardship program

SUPERVISION

The Education Technician reports to the Education & Volunteer Program Manager and works closely with other Education & Volunteer staff and AmeriCorps Members.

DESIRED SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:

Specific attributes & knowledge

1-2 years’ experience teaching in the classroom or in out-of-school-time programs

Knowledge of the San Joaquin Valley social and environmental challenges

Enthusiasm, patience, and group management skills to work with youth, including at-risk and underserved youth and community members of all ages

Public speaking and outreach experience

Willingness to monitor email, text, and phone to adapt to schedule modifications and communicate changes in availability

Practical knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) and Google products

Ability to encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among staff members and program participants

Ability to organize information and schedules, and prioritize multiple projects

Open to change and to considerable variety in the workplace

Willingness to work some weekends

Ability to learn fast, research information when needed and work independently

Strong team player, willing to assist others when needed

Self-starter approach to work, with an eagerness to consistently meet and exceed objectives

General

Demonstrated commitment to land conservation, general familiarity with land use and land management issues

Must have a valid Driver’s license, liability insurance and access to reliable transportation

Ability to effectively and efficiently operate office equipment including telephones, copiers, and computers

Ability to speak fluently in Spanish

WORK SETTING AND CONDITIONS

SRT’s headquarters in Visalia, California, a city of about 130,000 residents in the southern San Joaquin Valley. The region has a “Mediterranean” climate, with cold, moist winters (sometimes quite foggy) and hot, dry summers. The Education Technician will spend most of their time outside leading field trips with youth. Physical Demands

The Education Technician will spend 95% of their workday outdoors, on their feet in all types of weather conditions

Ability to lift and carry 25 pounds (i.e., educational materials, equipment, etc.)

Manual dexterity sufficient to reach and handle items, work with fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials; ability to stand, walk, sit, and reach

Ability to sit in workstation, type and work with a computer

Work hours are 3 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays (preparing for and leading field trips). The Education Technician will work 10-12 hours per week, including approximately 1 Saturday per month and occasional evening hours.

COMPENSATION

This is an hourly position on Band 1 of SRT’s compensation structure. The position offers an hourly rate between $18-$20 for new employees, depending on education and experience.

SRT is not able to provide relocation assistance for this position
