Environmental Water Network Webinar: Updating Water Rights Data for California (UPWARD)

July 30 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The State Water Board is working on a new project, Updating Water Rights Data for California (UPWARD), which aims to enhance how California collects and manages its water rights data and information. UPWARD will create a GIS-driven data system that will streamline water rights reporting processes online and allow users and the public to find and access water rights records. This is the largest data modernization project in the history of the Division of Water Rights and is crucial for California’s water resilience.

Join the Environmental Water Network on July 30 to learn from Brent Vanderburgh, the Supervising Geologist with the State Water Board. Brent currently oversees three programs dedicated to enhancing data processes throughout the Division of Water Rights, including UPWARD, and will provide an overview of this project. He will delve into the project’s background, the key players involved, and the California Water Accounting Tracking and Reporting System, the Digitization Program, and the Telemetry Research Unit. This session will also include time for questions and discussion.

Brent Vanderburgh spent the last 16 years with the California Water Boards, helping improve data processes in various regulatory programs, including the Tulare Lake Basin Irrigated Lands Regulatory Program, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act Program, the Cannabis Enforcement Program, and the Division of Water Rights at large. Brent specializes in data-driven regulatory program development with a focus on business process improvement and is an expert in spatial data acquisition and analysis.
