60th Anniversary of the Land & Water Conservation Fund

September 3

On September 3, 1964 – 60 years ago to the day – the most important and successful conservation program ever, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), was enacted into law. This historic legislation is a dedicated and permanent means for the conservation and protection of America’s irreplaceable natural, historic, cultural, and outdoor sites, including essential watersheds, open spaces, parks, trails and more.

Today, LWCF is critical for protecting and conserving natural resources critical to mitigating climate change and enhancing the resilience of our cities and communities against increasing threats such as severe heat; flash flooding, storm surge and sunny-day flooding; and other climate-related events. It also plays a pivotal role in ensuring that everyone has the chance to enjoy the outdoors, including disadvantaged communities with little access to publicly available outdoor recreation amenities. If you or your land trust has received LWCF funding, we encourage you to celebrate the LWCF on your social media platforms on September 3rd and use hashtag #LWCF60.
