Anti-easement Model Legislation Action Alert

The American Legislative Exchange Council released model legislation called the Limiting Conservation Easements Duration Act that would limit conservation easements to 20 years, except for governments. It would also cause easements to expire following the death of the current property owner at the earlier of either 10 years post-death or the original length of the agreement.

With many state legislatures currently out of session, now is the time for land trusts to educate your state legislators about the value of easements and why they need to oppose this language if it is introduced in your state. The LTA policy team is here to help, as its Defending Voluntary Private Land Conservation Toolkit. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to policy@lta.org with any questions.
