Quarterly Membership Meeting

November 2 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Your community foundation is more than a grantmaker. Here’s how to use it.

This session was on the agenda at the 2026 conference, but a scheduling glitch kept it off the program. Many of you told us you were sorry to miss it, so we’re bringing it to you now with the generous support of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. Many land trust staff and board members think of their community foundation as a grantor, an antiquated investment strategy, or even a barrier to donors who hold Donor Advised Funds. All three miss most of what a community foundation can do for your organization.

Philanthropy experts from the Sacramento Region Community Foundation will walk through what community foundations offer beyond grants, with examples from Sacramento and from foundations across the country. You’ll come away with practical ideas on:

  • Charitable funds, including the fast-growing Nonprofit Fund
  • Investment trends and strategies for your organization’s assets
  • Giving days: how to make the most of them
  • Planned giving tools and unusual gifts (land, stock, and more) that your foundation can help you accept
  • Visibility and connections: getting your work in front of local donors and partner nonprofits
  • Mentorship and continuing education for staff and board

This won’t be a lecture. We’ll start by asking where you are with your own community foundation, then make room for you to share what has worked, what hasn’t, and what you’d like to try. You’ll leave with ideas from the presenter and from fellow land trusts.
