Got milkweed? The Xerces Society is currently offering free milkweed seedlings to Land Trusts throughout the state!
The Western monarch population has declined dramatically over the past several decades, and the Xerces Society believes that increasing the amount of milkweed available to support Monarch breeding throughout their range is one significant action everyone can take to help save monarchs.
To facilitate this effort, the Xerces Society is launching a project aimed at increasing the amount of milkweed planted in landscapes throughout California. Through this statewide program, Xerces is offering free native milkweed seedlings, along with technical assistance, to managers of Land Trusts, public lands, working lands, or tribal lands in appropriate locations to support monarchs.
Through these efforts, the Xerces Society’s goal is to distribute 40,000 native milkweed seedlings over the next two years, and facilitate the planting of milkweed across hundreds of acres throughout the state.
Additional Information:
Project partners must be able to plant a minimum of 200 milkweed plants at a given time and be willing to pick up plants or pay for shipping. Partners may request up to 2,000 plants per project.
Milkweed transplants will be provided to project partners as either plugs or rhizomes. Native, regionally appropriate milkweed species will be used for all projects. Specific species will be dependent on project location, site conditions, and nursery availability. The Xerces Society will try to accommodate project timelines as much as possible, but please allow two to four months to fulfill requests.
